Spring is Here and So are Weekend Projects

I absolutely LOVE spring and summer! All you boot wearing, scarf loving, wintery people can have that mess! I will stick with 70-100 degrees, sunscreen, and the great outdoors. The weather was AMAZING this weekend. 70-80 degrees and bright sunshine, which led to our first weekend project of 2014. My parents had an outdoor dining table and chairs that was dirty, rusted, and paint chipping away.

They graciously gave it to us, and so the project began. We began by purchasing some paint thinner from Home Depot, and I poured it into a spray bottle and sprayed it liberally on all sides of the furniture. We let it sit for about 30-45 minutes. My fabulous husband then pressure washed each piece of the furniture on all sides, and the chipped paint and rust came off effortlessly.

The goal isn’t to get the furniture down to bare metal, but to get all the rust and chipped paint off so that you have a smooth surface to paint on. After pressure washing the furniture, we let it sit overnight. Below is a picture of what it looked like after it was pressure washed.

After church on Sunday, we began painting. We purchased Rustoleum Black spray paint. There’s 650,000,000 different kinds of spray paint, but after doing some online research, the textured paint and primer in one got the best reviews for outdoor use, so that’s what we went with. We chose the hammered texture, simply because that was more our taste than anything more glossy or the ones with sparkles in it.

We ended up using seven cans of spray paint, which only cost $44 and some change. The fine folks at Home Depot also threw in a huge cardboard box for free. We placed the pieces of furniture on the cardboard box and began by painting the underside of the furniture first. By the time we finished the underside of each piece, it was dry enough to turn over and paint the front side.

After we completed painting the furniture, we went shopping for cushions while it was drying. After browsing three or four stores, we ended up making our purchase from one of my favorite stores, Tuesday Morning! I was so excited, because we got the pillows for $9.99 each! If you haven’t priced outdoor seat cushions before, that’s a deal! So with the price of the paint thinner, paint, cushions, and the gas we put in my sister’s vehicle for transport of the furniture, this project only cost us $110! You won’t find any outdoor table, 4 chairs, and cushions anywhere for $110! Here’s the finished product!

Enjoy spring and summer by spending time with your family doing some home projects, and get outside and enjoy the fabulous weather! Come back next week to read about our first 5K as a family! Here’s one last picture of the furniture with Weston in the picture, simply because he’s so incredibly cute!
